LINCOLN _  Drake Hull and Chandler Morris skipped school at the University of Connecticut on Wednesday to go play golf. By the end of the day, they were convinced they made the right decision.
Instead of going to class, the two members of the UConn golf team made a 90-minute drive to Rhode Island to compete in qualifying for next year’s USGA Four-Ball Championship. They went out at Kirkbrae Country Club and made nine birdies and nine pars for a 62, which led the field.
The Cape Cod team of Joe Hunt and Jared Pane, helped by the day’s only eagle at the par-5 12th, recorded a 7-under 64 to take the second and last available spot.
When the national tournament is held in May, Hull and Morris will not have to travel nearly as far. The event will be held at the Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta, Fla., May 19-23.
``It’s 10 minutes from my house,’’ said Morris, who is from Hobe Sound, Fla. ``I know it well.’’
Morris, who grew up in Connecticut, is a freshman and Hull, who is from Rutland, Vt., a red-shirt sophomore.  The two were a true team at Kirkbrae.
``We each made at least five birdies,’’ said Hull, including holes where both had bird. They had birds at 3,4, 5 and 8 for a 31 on the front, then at 10, 11, 12, 16 and 17 for another 31 on the back. The two will not get in trouble for missing one day of classes.
``Our coach (Dave Pezzino) knew about it,’’ Hull said.
``He actually encouraged us to play,’’ Morris added.
They were among the late starters. Their worked knocked one of the first groups off the tee, Hunt and Pane, off the top of the leader board. Hunt and Pane started fast with birds on four of the first five holes. They finished strong with birds on three of the last five. In between their work included the day’s only eagle at the par-5 12th, enough so that even two bogeys could not prevent them from earning a spot.
The team of Jordan Burke and Ryan Riley shot 66 to earn first alternate spot.
