NEWPORT – The USGA celebrated a successful 2023 U.S. Senior Open last week at SentryWorld in Stevens Point, Wis. Now, the focus turns to Newport Country Club for 2024.

Rhode Island native Brett Quigley, who finished T4 at this year’s event, earned a spot to play for the championship next June in front of his home crowd. He played outstanding Sunday and tied the second-lowest round of the championship, which featured seven birdies and only two bogeys to card a 66.

Fellow Rhode Islander Billy Andrade finished T27 and will need to qualify for an opportunity to play Newport. Cumberland native Brad Adamonis finished 56th at 17-over.

Preparations are already underway for the 2024 U.S. Senior Open in Newport. Plans were nearly complete three years ago when Newport was set to host the championship, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so the bulk of the work is already done.

After his top-10 finish at SentryWorld, Quigley can't wait to compete for the championship at the historic Newport Country Club.

“I get goosebumps just thinking about it,” he said. “The clubhouse, the property, I know a lot of the history behind it, and the golf course is a beautiful walk,” he said. “It’s a fun place.”

Quigley added, “Being home at Newport, that’s special. Rhode Island is really special – loves golf. Newport Country Club, the first Open, first Amateur there – really cool stuff. I know they’re excited for that championship and certainly I am too.”

Of course, Quigley is referring to Newport Country as a founding member of the USGA that hosted the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur in 1895. In fact, Tiger Woods won his second U.S. Amateur Championship at Newport in 1995. In 2006, Annika Sorenstam won the U.S. Women’s Open at Newport CC.

“Rhode Island is great,” Andrade said. “New England is a great sports place. Rhode island is a great sports town . . . The golf course is phenomenal. The players are going to absolutely fall in love with it.”
